Having returned to consciousness after the tragedy with the E1 (Z11), BMW made another “green” prototype, even smaller. In 1993, also at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the German automaker introduced the E1 Z15 concept car.
E1 with the Z15 index was not much different from the burned-out car. The design and batteries have changed a bit. Instead of the sodium-sulfur batteries used on the Z11, nickel-salt batteries appeared. Both projects called E1 are considered the forerunners of the BMW i3 hatchback which debuted in 2013 – 22 years after the release of the Z11.
